Time for a new Godwin's Law
This is a post from my old LiveJournal account, which became the basis for this site. You can find out about my old LJ site, and why I moved it here in this post.
This one seems to aged rather well! I notice even Mike Godwin's noticed something like this, and given people permission to move beyond his law...
Godwin's Law ("As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.") was relevant in 1989 when it was first coined by Mike Godwin, but has since become redundant in US politics as the Overton Window gracelessly lumbers rightward, and needs to be updated.
Here's my attempt: "As an online discussion with a US right winger grows longer, the probability of the right winger invoking Godwin's Law in order to shut down further discussion of their views approaches 1."
